PostSubject: joseph smith of moorgarth ingleton   Sat 15 Mar 2008 - 21:51

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for the parents of Joseph Smith who married Isabella Battersby 27 Dec 1796 in Bentham, West Riding of Yorkshire. I know he was a yeoman of Moorgarth, Ingleton, that he had a brother called Bryan, and he died in 1802 leaving one son Joseph Waller Smith. Any help tracing Joseph or Bryan prior to 1796 would be greatly appreciated.

Nice to meet you! Yes and thank you for sharing your West Riding of Yorkshire SMITH interests, of Bentham. Give it time, and hopefully other members might just think they have a connection, or some data that could help you..........

In the meantime, Maxine has said she'll come back here to your Topic and write to you again here soon. We'll see if there's anything we can come up with for you suronda, and will now pin your Topic to the Calendar for a couple of days Great Stuff!!

Hi again,
Thankyou for your warm welcome. I'm wondering if my Joseph Smith actually came from Tatham as so far the only Joseph and Bryan siblings I have found in the right time scale were son's of Francis Smith in Tatham.
I'm descended from Joseph's grandson William Smith who lived and died in Ingleton, and his daughter Elizabeth who moved to Burnley and died in Brierfield.
If these names mean anything to anyone, please contact me. Help urgently needed!

Hiya Suronda,

Have you looked on the Lancashire Online Parish records?

Have a look here

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Tatham/index.html

Hope this helps

Hi again Suronda,

Just wondering how your research is going, and if you have discovered whether your Joseph was definitely from Tatham, before he went to Ingleton?

In the meantime - in view of your Elizabeth Smith having moved to Burnley, I've put a copy of your notes on a new topic on our East Lancashire Board..........
>> Smiths - Ingleton,WRY - to Burnley/Brierfield,E.Lan >>
please feel free to add anything else there about Elizabeth's Burnley connections, etc.

Good luck and we'll look forward to any updates on your research

Carole wave

PS - suronda - you're now in the >> red usergroup >> - so your name should display in red. ie - for those researching Smiths of Lancashire, W.R.Yorkshire or Isle of Man Great Stuff!!

Still no nearer with placeing Joseph's birth place - or date of birth. Unfortunately he died when his son (and only child) Joseph Waller Smith was only two years old, so there are no family names to look into apart from Joseph. I have found Waller's living in Ingleton at this time, but no connecting marriages to account for the middle name. I found mention of his brother Bryan through Joseph's Will - held at Preston Records Office. Am now busy searching Will's of other Smith's from the area in the hope of getting a bit further.

Hi suronda,

First a little map snippet so that anyone interested can see the area that we're talking about. Showing the North Lancs/North WRY boundary and the close proximity of Tatham, Bentham & Ingleton.

snippet taken from Lancashire Family History &
Heraldry Society's >>North Lancashire 1851 Census map >>

Well it is looking as though your theory about the Joseph and Bryan Smith Christened in Tatham, sons of Francis, is possibly your family - is probably correct!!

Here is the marriage of whom I'm now believing is that Francis......
nb - described as being a Weaver of Bentham....

From Lancs Online Parish Clerks Site (OPC)
>> Marriages at St James the Less in the Parish of Tatham >>
Register for the years 1754 - 1812. Transcription by Lynn Ransom Burton.
8 Jan 1774 Francis Smith, Bentham parish weaver,
& Elin Borrow
W: Robert Clough, John Smith
Entry Number: 120

There are only 2 marriages for name of Francis Smith in this Tatham 1754-1812 Register transcription at Lancs OPC, and the other one, who I'm now believing to be father of the above Francis, is.........

20 Apr 1755 Francis Smith, Melling parish yeoman,
& Elizabeth Huthersall, by Licence
W: Josias Smith, Richard Ash
Entry Number: 12

Tatham baptisms registers
No transcripts yet at OPC, but they are indexed in the IGI -
in Tatham Batch Number P005271 1558 - 1837
(this type of Batch number, as you probably know, indicates that these have been transcribed by the Church of Latter Day Saints from the actual Parish Register or Bishops Transcripts)

So - from IGI Batch No. P005271 - Tatham Baptisms:-

Children of Francis Smith
No mother's name given, but probably of Francis Smith Snr - 1755 Marriage above)

JOHN SMITH
Chr: 09 SEP 1759 Tatham
ISABEL SMITH
Chr: 21 JUN 1761 Tatham
FRANCIS SMITH
Chr: 27 MAY 1764 Tatham
MARY SMITH
Chr: 28 JUL 1765 Tatham
WILLIAM SMITH
Chr: 21 FEB 1768 Tatham,
SUSAN SMITH
Chr: 24 JUN 1770 Tatham
JAMES SMITH
Chr: 19 JUL 1772 Tatham

Children of Francis Smith
No mother's name given, but probably of Francis Smith Jnr - 1774 Marriage above)

Your Joseph & Bryan ???

JOSEPH SMITH
Chr: 08 JAN 1775 Tatham
BRYAN SMITH
Chr: 05 AUG 1781 Tatham

All these Baptisms indexed in IGI Batch P005271 - Tatham Baptisms:-
(can search full batch at >> Familysearch.org >>)

Does this help you feel a bit more confident about the Tatham connection, suronda?
or am I barking up the wrong family tree Very Happy

I'll put quote of our notes about Tatham from this topic, onto our "Lancashire - other Districts" Board (in view of Tatham being part of Lancaster District")
ps: Done it >> Smiths of Tatham, Lancaster District, & Bentham WRY >>

Chat again soon,

Suronda, please see above first,

Depends what age when Christened - but if only an infant, he'd be a bit too young for the marriage in 1774!! ck-hrrmm
Hmmmm - would need to check the Tatham Register itself, or the microfiche copy - to check whether that Christening date given in the IGI is correct. But perhaps Francis, father of Joseph was Christened in Bentham, anyway?
Carole hello you

Aaaah this looks more like it.......

FRANCIS SMITH
Chr: 15 APR 1739 Bentham, Yorkshire
Parents Thomas & Margaret SMITH
IGI Batch No. P007301 1673 - 1812

Suronda - you probably already know this, but if not.....
Registers for Bentham included in the IGI are........

Parish of Low Bentham
C 1673-1812;
M 1668-1812
Chapel le Dale Chapelry
C 1775-1813, 1813-1843
Chapelry of Ingleton.
C 1607-1812, 1813-1848;
M 1607-1643, 1654-1844

Hi suronda,

Sorry about the delayed response - just trying to catch up now after our "limited access" period. Sounds as though you had a good holiday in Greece & have probably had chance to cool down by now!! Especially with all the rain we had this last couple of weeks! wet, wet, wet!! ck-hrrmm

A new member called Suzy wrote in the Project's Guestbook - & I think it must be yourself with whom she's discovered a connection to her husband's Smiths!! Oh that's good news! Hope Suzy's been in contact with you. I quoted a copy of her message here.............
>> Welcome suzyjsmith!! >>

Look forward to hearing more about your research suronda,
