My mother's cousin, Ellen Laura Smith (nee Dunn) born in 1885, in Douglas Isle of Man, youngest daughter of Thomas Dunn (of Marown IOM) and Caroline (nee McKay, of Laxey IOM), married Albert Ernest Smith (of Warrington, date not known). If any distant relative of mine is researching this family, I have a very detailed history tracing back the Manx lines.

Hi Barrie,

Thank you very much for telling us about your Smith interests of Warrington and Isle of Man.

You probably know that, although Warrington is nowadays in the post-1974 Administrative county of Cheshire, it is in fact in the traditional county of Lancashire. So I've moved your Topic from the Cheshire board to here - the Liverpool and Lancs South-West Board. And once our Isle of Man board is re-opened, will post a copy of your Topic there too, in connection with your Dunn and McKay interests.

I have a new database of Warrington marriages, recently submitted by a member from her own research of Parish registers, and will be uploading that to the site as soon as possible.
In the meantime, I'll see if I have any note of the Warrington marriage of Albert Ernest Smith to Ellen Laura Dunn & will report back to you.

PS: It was interesting to discover that the following entry in the
1940 Crew HMS Navy Ships Disaster Database refers to your Uncle Great Stuff!!
Thanks for letting me know about this.

Hi Barrie,

For interest, have you got the 1901 Census Data for the Dunns in the Isle of Man and/or the Smiths in Warrington? I notice in the 1901 Census Index, persons named Dunn birthplace Isle of Man, includes no Ellen Laura, but this is the only possible,
for the correct age..............
Name Age Where born Administrative county Civil parish
Ella Dunn 16 Isle Of Man Douglas Isle Of Man Onchan

and for Albert Ernest Smith, birthplace Warrington - just these possibles for probable age range - the first one seems the most possible..??
Name Age Where born Administrative county Civil parish Occupation
Albert E Smith 20 Lancs Warrington Lancaster Warrington Locomotive Engine Cleaner
Albert Smith 19 Lancas Warrington Lancaster Warrington General Labourer
Albert Smith 15 Warrington Lancs Lancashire Warrington Joiner

The Warrington St Pauls marriages database is uploaded now (>>info>>) But it only goes up to 1907 & the marriage of Albert Ernest Smith & Ellen Laura Dunn is not included.

As you'll know, Warrington was in Prescot Registration District at that time. Quite a lot of Prescot District marriages now included in LancashireBMD online database but none for your Albert and Ellen included there as yet. What approximate date might they have been married?

Is 1910 possible & could it have been that they were married somewhere else away from Warrington? Reason I ask is that the nearest possible marriage match I've come across is at Hull Registry Office 1910, Yorkshire. As you'll no doubt know - Hull is a Port on the East coast - so about as far away from the West coast & Warrington & Isle of Man as you can get cross country!! haaa haa Laughing but thought would mention it anyway, nothing to be disregarded.

Bye for now

Hi Barrie,

further to our messages off this board.........
you wrote:
...... Ella Dunn 16 Isle Of Man Douglas Isle Of Man Onchan' sounds right. Did you find this in the Onchan census or Warrington?

Her uncle (my grandfather) had come to Warrington in 1900 for work and married my grandmother, Laura Price (who followed him from the Island) in St. Pauls. The vicar had to get witnesses off the street as they didn't know anybody!Perhaps that is why Ella came to Warrington (although she may have met Ernest Smith as a holiday maker in Douglas).....

Aaaawwwww just imagine that! getting witnesses off the street. What a lovely story.

Sorry I didn't clarify very well about the 1901 index entry for Ella Dunn 16. She was living in Onchan, Isle of Man, & shown as born in Douglas, Isle of Man. Here's some other 1901 Census index data for other DUNNs born in the Isle of Man, who might be related??

1901 Census Isle of Man / Civil Parish: Onchan
Both indexed as born in Douglas IoM
Name / Age / Occupation
** Ella Dunn / 16 ** (as already mentioned)
Beecher Dunn 21 / Painter & Paperhanger

1901 Census Isle of Man / Civil Parish: Conchan
These are indexed as born in Douglas IoM
Name / Age / Occupation
Sophia Dunn 40
Elzabeth Dunn 32
Henry J Dunn 17 / Green Grocers Shop Assistant Apprentice
Florence E Dunn 13
Harrington Dunn 9
George H Dunn 7
Francis Dunn 5

Also in 1901 Civil Parish Conchan.........
Ellen Dunn 43 / born in Malew Isle Of Man
William Dunn 50 / born in Marown Isle Of Man / Wine & Merchants Carter

1901 Lancashire Census Index
Civil Parish : South Manchester
Katherine Dunn 33 / birthplace Isle Of Man
Civil Parish : West Derby
Frank Dunn 20 / birthplace Isle Of Man / Baker

Barrie, you might have already discovered the following "Manx-Note-Book" web-page, but if not, this will probably be of interest to you........
>> Onchan - Parish dedicated to St Conchan >>

Will have another look at your SMITHs in Warrington, some time soon

Bye for now

Many thanks for the information. Some Dunns listed are my relatives - the family died out in the IOM with the death of my great aunt in 1926. My great grandfather had been brought to the Island from Ireland c1826, as a baby "in long clothes". He eventually married my great grandmother who was a Gell, an old Manx family which I have traced to the mid-1600s. I did an article on the IOM Dunns for the IOM Family History Society about 20 years ago and eventually received a response to it from a distant relative in New Zealand! I was curious about possible Smith descendents of Albert Ernest Smith and Ellen Laura Dunn, as I can let them have information on their Manx connection.

It's good to hear from you Barrie and I hope someone notices your post and gets in touch! It would be grand if you could find some more relatives. Gillian
